When a burst pipe flooded the storage room of a private collector, a significant acrylic work on canvas was exposed to standing water for an estimated eighteen hours before the damage was discovered. The work was brought to I'Arte Rinasce within twenty-four hours of discovery — a critical window that proved decisive in the outcome.
On arrival, the work was assessed for immediate risks: active mould growth, paint lifting, and canvas deformation. Moisture mapping using a non-contact hygrometer identified the most saturated zones, concentrated in the lower third of the composition. UV fluorescence revealed early-stage mould colonies along the tacking margins and verso. The paint layer showed localised lifting in areas where the acrylic binder had softened under prolonged moisture exposure.
The work was placed face-up on a padded drying table in a controlled environment maintained at 18°C and 45% relative humidity. Forced-air drying was deliberately avoided to prevent uneven drying stress. Over seventy-two hours, the canvas was monitored at four-hour intervals and the drying rate adjusted by modifying ambient humidity. This controlled approach prevented the formation of tide lines and minimised canvas distortion.
Once stable, the mould colonies were treated with a biocide solution applied under controlled conditions. Surface cleaning removed residual tide lines and grime using a carefully selected aqueous system, tested on inconspicuous areas before application. The paint layer was consolidated where lifting had occurred, using a dilute acrylic dispersion introduced under the lifted edges with a fine brush.
The work was returned to the collector in stable condition, with no visible evidence of the water damage. A preventive conservation report was prepared, including recommendations for storage conditions, environmental monitoring, and emergency response protocols to protect the collection going forward.
